Graduate Funding Opportunities

The majority of graduate students receiving financial assistance from the university come in the form of departmental teaching and research assistantships. To find out how to apply for an assistantship, contact the graduate academic department to which you are applying. For information about university fellowships and other opportunities, please refer to the Office of Graduate Studies web page at:
www.gradschool.fsu.edu/Funding-Awards.
NOTE: The International Center does not make funding decisions.

Undergraduate Tuition Adjustments

The State of Florida provides an allocation of money each year to be used for out-of-state tuition waivers for deserving undergraduate international students. The awards are made for one semester at a time for up to 12 hours. You must reapply each semester that you would like to be considered for a waiver or grant.

Students are responsible for paying the in-state portion of their tuition, fees for the out-of-state credit hours waived, and any remaining tuition and fees for credit hours not waived.

The amount of out-of-state tuition awarded to each student depends on:
  • the total amount allocated to the International Center each year;
  • the overall profile of FSU GPAs (grade point average) of the applicant pool; and,
  • each applicants' cumulative FSU GPA.
Awards are made by the International Center's Tuition-Waiver Committee.

Who is eligible to apply?
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate degree-seeking international student in F-1 visa status.
  • Priority will be given to those who have completed at least one semester of study at Florida State University.
  • Must have a GPA of 3.3 and above
  • Those not enrolled full-time may apply if the reduced course load has been approved by the students' academic adviser and the international student adviser and all other eligibility requirements are met.
  • Students who have already used up or lost their 2 + 2 Panama Program waivers are eligible to apply.
NOTE:
  • A limited number of credit hours may be awarded to students who have demonstrated an unexpected and urgent financial need. Complete an application AND also submit an explanation (200 words or less) explaining your financial situation and your plans to resolve your current need/difficulty. Awards for waivers based on need are meant to help you transition to a more stable source(s) of funding.
  • For the summer semester, full-time enrollment is not required in order to be eligible.
  • Please contact the IC Office Manager, Christina Harris at cmharris@admin.fsu.edu or at 850.644.4696.
Who is not eligible to apply?
  • Students on the 2+2 Panama program receiving in-state tuition, or students receiving a departmental waiver, and special students are not eligible for the Out-of State tuition waiver.
Application Deadline:

The last day of drop/add for each semester.*

* If this date falls on a weekend, the deadline will be the last business day before this date.

Selection

  • After the posted application deadline, the committee will review all submitted applications to verify eligibility and fund distribution.
  • Available waivers are granted to the most students possible in descending order from 4.0 FSU GPA.
  • Awards are generally posted beginning the 5th day of classes and before the fee payment deadline.
  • Students will be notified via email of the committee's decision.  (No phone calls please).

Application

Complete the application form below and submit to the International Center by the deadline listed above for the semester you are applying for. Students must apply for each semester that they would like to be considered for a waiver grant.

Emergency Loans

The IC has limited funds for short-term loans to students. The maximum amount loaned by the IC is $300. Typically the loans must be repaid by the end of the term. Emergency loans cannot be made to pay for tuition and fees. An emergency loan cannot be provided if a student has a financial debt to the university.
