Readmission

There are two kinds of readmission. Each is different in terms of immigration processing:

  • Readmission to a second degree. If a student graduates from one degree and is admitted to pursue another degree, this is a readmission. It may be at the same level, e.g., a second Master's degree, or a higher degree, e.g., Bachelor's to Master's degree or Master's to Doctoral degree.
    1. Student applies for second degree (whether at a higher level or the same level) through the Office of Admissions/the Graduate Department.
    2. Student submits a completed IC Readmission form.
    3. Student submits a completed Certification of Financial Responsibility form and supporting financial documents to the International Center.

SEVIS Deadline: The new I-20 must be issued before the end of the 60-day grace period after completion of the original academic program or 60 days after the end date of any authorized Optional practical Training. For instance, if a student graduates on April 30 2006, the I-20 may be issued no later than June 30, 2006. If an I-20 cannot be issued by this time, the student falls out of legal F-1 status.

Important Note: If a student has been issued an I-20 for the second degree but realizes that s/he cannot complete the first degree (requirements for graduation have not all been met), the student MUST INFORM the IC as soon as possible. In such cases, the new I-20 can be deferred to the next available semester or cancelled. This is very important because of federal reporting requirements.
  • Readmission due to non-enrollment for two consecutive semesters. The university requires readmission if a student has not been enrolled for two (2) consecutive semesters.

Procedure: How the student's immigration paperwork is handled depends on the status of the student's most recent SEVIS record. Please consult with an immigration adviser.

SEVIS Deadline: None. The only deadlines that would apply are the deadlines of the Admission Office and the graduate department.
All forms are available in alternative format upon request.
